On what basis it is read
Why anything from this source may be held at all, where that can be re-checked, what we altered, and how to reach the live record.
- On what basis it is read
- Bibliographic facts (CC0) · The record's own licence
- Where the basis can be re-checked
- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/home/about/policies/ — the NLM terms for the E-utilities, which permit retrieval and local processing of citation records; and the citation itself is a set of facts about a publication rather than anything a person wrote. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/utils/oa/oa.fcgi — the NCBI open-access service, which answers per PMC article with the licence the publisher deposited it under. As of 03.09.2026 that address returns 404 and no record resolves, so this basis currently permits nothing in practice, which is the fail-closed answer and not an omission.
- How the source must be credited
- Article text held under the licence the publisher deposited with PubMed Central, named on the record it governs. Citation data courtesy of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (PubMed). NLM does not endorse this product.
- What we changed
- We hold the citation fields listed here, map them onto this programme's own vocabularies and record the date we processed them. We do not alter the values themselves, and every record links back to the live PubMed entry, which is authoritative. Where a record's own licence permits it, we hold the abstract as deposited, unaltered, and record the licence token, the URL that answered and the date we processed it. We alter no wording.

This source publishes terms rather than signing agreements, so there is no contract and none is claimed.
What may be held
Exactly these fields, and nothing else. A field the source sends that is not listed here is not kept.

- Basis for holding anything
- NLM permits retrieval and local processing of citation records. Copyright in article text remains with publishers, so the default is metadata and a locator. Where the NCBI open-access service states a licence for a specific article, that licence governs that article. Provisional reading, needs legal confirmation (BL-07).

What it may speak to
With the rank it holds when sources disagree, and why.
- Publication record — An index copies the publication record accurately and is not its origin; it may lag a correction by the publisher.
- Retraction — Indexes carry retraction flags reliably and receive them second-hand.
What it may not assert
Nothing is refused to this kind of source.
This map holds only what has been read and checked against a source, and nothing has been recorded for this section. Empty here means exactly that — not zero, and not a fault in the page.
